Apple to construct a new campus in Austin, creating jobs across the US
Apple has announced a major expansion of its operations in Austin, Texas. This includes an investment of $1 billion to build a new campus in North Austin. The company also publicized plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City. These plans will also involve expanding in cities across the United States including Pittsburgh, New York and Boulder, Colorado over the next three years. Most notably, there is a high likelihood for additional expansion elsewhere in the US over time.
Employment projection
The announcement puts a limit to a year of continued job creation. In 2018 alone, Apple added 6,000 jobs to its American workforce and now employs about 90,000 people in 50 states. As earlier announced in January 2018, the company is on course to create at least 20,000 jobs in the US by 2023. Currently, Apple employs over 1,000 people in 16 states.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, notes that the company is proud to bring new investment, jobs, and opportunity to cities across the United States. Moreover, he also highlighted their delight at deepening the company’s quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin.
“Of course, talent, creativity, and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas should never be limited by region or zip code. With this new expansion, we are assuring our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce across the country,” said Tim Cook.
Apple’s Job Creation
Over the past years, Apple has been able to create and sustain more than 2 million jobs in all 50 states. This includes workers at 9,000 suppliers and manufacturers in the US. Furthermore, the flourishing App Store ecosystem is responsible for more than 1.5 million American jobs.
Apple’s job creation efforts involve a wide range of roles including advanced designing, engineering, research, retail, operations, and customer support functions. Presently, Apple operates retail stores in 44 states plus the District of Columbia. This has seen the company add at least 7,000 US retail jobs over the last five years. Apple intends to open more stores and improve the customer experience at many existing retail locations across the country.
The Austin Campus
According to the plan, this new Apple’s campus will be located less than a mile from its existing facilities. This campus is on a 133-acre piece of land and is intended to accommodate 5,000 more employees. The campus has the capacity to hold up to 15,000 and is expected to make Apple the largest private employer in Austin.
Apple is among the world’s most innovative companies and a passionate creator of jobs in Texas and across the US. Their decision to expand operations in Texas State is a testament of the high-quality workforce and unmatched economic environment that Texas offers. At the new campus, the company will create a broad range of job functions including engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales, and customer support. Arguably, Austin already represents the largest population of Apple employees outside of Cupertino.
The Austin Mayor, Steve Adler, highlighted the joy to have Apple investing more in within the city. Further, he applied the company for being part of the Austin community for a quarter century and for their continued show of goodwill. As far as employment opportunities are concerned, the company will bring more middle-skilled jobs to the area. Particularly, the community around Austin is gratified by the company’s commitment to providing a great place to work for a large and growing number of America’s veterans.
The County Director of Administration, Rebecca Clemons, acknowledges the company as a true part of the Texas family. In addition, she recognized Apple’s vision of innovation, quality, simplicity, and alignment with the values in Williamson County. The new expansion is an excellent example of the astounding growth and opportunity that are possible when a company and a community work together. As part of creating renewable energy, the new campus will preserve 50 acres open space.
Projection of a Nationwide Growth
The company has a growth plan to increase the number of employees in regions across the united stated. The implementation of this growth plan targets the next three years to expand over 1,000 in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City each. Apple will also create hundreds of new jobs in Pittsburgh, New York, Boulder, Boston, and Portland, Oregon. Recently, the company opened its newest office in Nashville, Tennessee while its Miami office is projected to double in size.
Over the next five years, Apple plans to invest $10 billion in US data centers. This includes $4.5 billion this and next year. Apple’s data centers in North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada are currently being expanded as part of the nationwide growth plan. Preparations are in progress to establish the company’s newest data center in Waukee. Remarkably, all of the company’s data centers run on 100 percent renewable energy. This goes a long way to reduce operational costs.
